Rio Vista Bridge Scheduled for Second 55-Hour Closure
Extensive Detour in Place for State Route 12 Motorists

RIO VISTA – Caltrans is advising motorists of a scheduled closure of the Rio Vista Bridge (Helen Madere Memorial Bridge) on State Route 12 (SR-12) for ongoing repairs.

This $11.24 million project funded through the Bridge Rehabilitation and Replacement Program will require multiple 55-hour weekend closures for the work to be completed because of the limited width of the bridge to allow for heavy equipment access.

The project is making necessary mechanical repairs and rehabilitating the roadway surface by placing a polyester concrete overlay on the bridge deck. Work also includes replacing bridge rails, repaving bridge approach ramps, and constructing Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliant ramps.

During the weekend closure from November 15-18, the contractor will be placing polyester concrete on the bridge deck. Potential strong odors from the overlay are a normal part of the process of the material being used to improve rideability for the bridge deck.

These upgrades will improve safety and comply with ADA accessibility requirements to expand access for pedestrians and bicyclists.

The 55-hour weekend bridge closure schedule will lessen total project workdays and help avoid the wait times during peak commute hours during the work week. Motorists could encounter additional travel times of up to two hours using the described detours (see maps provided) from Rio Vista to Sacramento County on SR-12 across the Sacramento River. Please allow for extra travel time to reach your destination, especially for scheduled appointments and work schedules.

All work on road construction projects will be suspended on weekends and holidays. Schedules are subject to change due to weather conditions, equipment or material availability, or other unexpected events.

CLOSURE DATES:

• 9 p.m. Friday, November 15 to 4 a.m. Monday, November 18
• 9 p.m. Friday, December 13 to 4 a.m. Monday, December 16

Caltrans District 3 is responsible for maintaining and operating 4,385 lane miles in 11 Sacramento Valley and Northern Sierra counties. Caltrans reminds motorists to “Be Work Zone Alert” and slow in construction zones for the safety of travelers and crews performing these improvements.

The I-80 Express Lanes project is on-going and is estimated to be completed by Fall 2025.

Caltrans urges drivers to follow all construction zone speed limits and to drive with extreme caution as work continues.

To ensure your safety and that of our crews, please follow these Caltrans guidelines when traveling:

Prepare Your Vehicle: Make sure brakes, windshield wipers, defroster, heater, and exhaust systems are in good working order. Proper maintenance is essential for safe driving in wet and low-visibility conditions.

Check Your Tires: Verify tire pressure and tread depth for optimal traction on wet surfaces.

Use Headlights in Rain: California law requires headlights during rain to improve visibility for yourself and other drivers.

Slow Down and Increase Following Distance: Wet roads increase stopping distances. Give yourself extra space to stop safely and reduce your speed as conditions dictate.

Avoid Sudden Lane Changes: Limited visibility can make lane markers difficult to see. Keep steady in your lane and avoid abrupt moves to maintain control on slick roads.

SR 37/Fairgrounds Dr Groundbreaking in Vallejo

SOLANO COUNTY – Today, the Solano Transportation Authority, in partnership with the City of Vallejo, Caltrans, and Solano County is hosting a groundbreaking event for the State Route 37 (SR 37)/Fairgrounds Drive Interchange Improvement Project. This is a one year, $25 million project to create roadway improvements along portions of Fairgrounds Drive and Redwood Parkway/Redwood Street, as well as several nearby intersections and interchanges within the city of Vallejo.

This Project will widen and improve 1.5 miles of Fairgrounds Drive, extending from the State Route 37 interchange to the Redwood Parkway/Interstate 80 Interchange. The Project will implement a Diverging Diamond Interchange design that will significantly improve traffic flow and safety, while reducing congestion and greenhouse gas emissions. Once the Project is completed, it will be safer and easier for motorists, pedestrians, and cyclists to access and navigate.

The Project supports Solano 360, a larger countywide economic development to revitalize the area and encourage economic growth and development. This includes a mobility hub at the Fairgrounds site, which is funded by One Bay Area Grant Cycle 3 (OBAG-3) and various grants provided by the STA to the County—the project sponsor. Improvements will also be made to a number of intersections and interchanges, including Redwood Street/Parkway and Interstate 80, Fairgrounds Drive and State Route 37. This Project will relieve congestion and improve traffic flow on local streets, improve the existing interchange and intersection operations, improve the safety of local streets, and increase capacity of the local roadway network to support future growth.

“Together we’re advancing initiatives focused on creating safer, more efficient travel options for all modes of transportation, from vehicles to bicycles to pedestrians,” said Dave Ambuehl, Caltrans Chief Deputy District Director.
